Thinking that we disinfect to be clean, in reality, our home is gradually poisoning us. If we think about the bread cut on the kitchen counter, the spoon left aside, the plate wiped with a “clean” cloth or the water wiped off the counter, all of these materials actually end up in contact with our mouths. We inhale them through the air in our home, absorb them through our skin from carpets, parquet, bathtub or furniture.
In fact, we can completely abandon chemical detergents and clean our entire house using only vinegar, baking soda, borax, Aleppo soap, or Castile soap. To these, we can add essential oils with antibacterial, antifungal, and antiviral effects for a natural and effective cleaning.
We can also pour vinegar into the fabric softener compartment of the washing machine and the rinse aid compartment of the dishwasher to remove chemical residues left on clothes and dishes.
We must not forget about other harmful substances such as naphthalene, silver cleaning solutions, or "anti-allergy" sprays — which, in fact, poison us daily.
Instead of mothballs, we can use cedar wood pads with a few drops of cedar essential oil. To clean silver, we can prepare a mixture of baking soda and lemon essential oil, and to combat dust mites, we can spray the room, beds and linens with a spray of palmarosa or eucalyptus essential oil.
