Natural ingredients, the benefits of essential oils, and the experience of creating a personalized care product.

On an October morning, we met at enRose Gallery in Bucharest for a workshop dedicated to aromatherapy and discovering essential oils. Alongside Mădălina Ulmeanu, an aromatherapy expert, DO Botanica guests explored the properties of natural ingredients and how they can be incorporated into body care and moments of relaxation.

We began with an introduction to the world of aromatherapy: how scents affect the senses, what benefits they can offer for well-being, and why the quality of ingredients, concentration, and proper use of each essential oil matter.

Sleep Well, Be Well, Abundance and Energy Cleaning were the four DO Botanica essential oil blends around which the experience was built. Each guest had the opportunity to discover their scents, choose one, or combine several, depending on personal preferences.

Starting with cold-pressed jojoba oil, valued for its delicate texture and emollient properties, participants created their own body oil, adding drops of essential oils in proportions suitable for topical application, under the guidance of the specialist.

Beyond the practical part, the meeting was an opportunity to better understand what goes into an aromatherapy product: the selection of ingredients, the particularities of each blend, and the importance of carefully crafted formulas.

We ended the morning with personalized formulas, conversations, and a new perspective on natural care.

At DO Botanica, we want to bring aromatherapy closer to people through carefully formulated products, quality ingredients, and experiences that help us understand and use them consciously.

What aromatherapy is and how essential oils work
Aromatherapy is the practice of using essential oils, extracted from flowers, leaves, peels, resins, or roots, for the well-being of the body and mind. An essential oil concentrates the aromatic compounds of the plant: a single drop can contain active substances from large amounts of plant material.
Essential oils work in two main ways. Olfactory, the scent quickly reaches the areas of the brain associated with emotions and memory, which is why a fragrance can soothe or energize. Topically, when properly diluted in a carrier oil, they become part of a care ritual. That is why the quality of essential oils, purity, and concentration matter just as much as the scent.
The four DO Botanica essential oil blends from the workshop
Each blend has an aromatic profile and a suitable time of day. All are made from natural essential oils, many of which are organic.
| Blend | Essential oils | Suitable for |
|---|---|---|
| Sleep Well | lavender, bergamot, Roman chamomile, ylang-ylang, vetiver, cedar | evening, relaxation, bedtime ritual |
| Be Well | lemon, eucalyptus, geranium, oregano | freshness, concentration, clean air at home |
| Abundance | orange, fir, frankincense, patchouli, ginger, clove, cinnamon, myrrh | warm atmosphere, meditation, mindfulness |
| Energy Cleaning | geranium, bay leaf, sage, rosemary, lavender, mugwort | clarity, balance, energetic purification of space |
How to use essential oils at home
In a diffuser or aromatic vessel
The simplest way to enjoy aromatherapy at home is with a ceramic diffuser for essential oils. Fill the diffuser vessel with water, add a few drops of the blend as indicated on the label, and light the candle. The four DO Botanica blends are formulated for this aromatic use: Sleep Well in the evening, in the bedroom; Be Well or Energy Cleaning during the day; Abundance for moments of calm.
Topically: natural body oil and massage oil
Essential oils should never be applied pure to the skin. For a natural body oil or a homemade massage oil, choose essential oils recommended for topical use and dilute them in a carrier oil. For a healthy adult, the usual concentration is 1–2%, which is approximately 6–12 drops per 30 ml of carrier oil. For the face and sensitive skin, 0.5–1% is sufficient.
If you prefer ready-to-use options for the skin without calculations: Rose Roll, the mint and eucalyptus roll-on, the rosemary and grapefruit massage roll-on, or the body oil for stretch mark care.
Why jojoba oil is the ideal base for a body oil
Cold-pressed jojoba oil is technically a liquid plant wax, with a composition close to the skin's natural sebum. It absorbs quickly, leaves no greasy feeling, is suitable for all skin types, including sensitive skin, and remains stable over time. Here is how it compares with other carrier oils:
| Plant oil | Texture | Ideal for |
|---|---|---|
| Jojoba oil | light, absorbs quickly | any skin type, daily use |
| Argan oil | velvety | dry skin, after showering |
| Rosehip oil | fluid, rich | areas that need intensive care |
| Tamanu oil | medium | massage; avoid sun after application |
Safety guidelines for essential oils
As Mădălina Ulmeanu emphasized in the workshop, natural does not automatically mean harmless. Here are a few simple rules:
- Always read the label: a product marked “for aromatic use” is used in a diffuser, not on the skin.
- For topical use, use essential oils only diluted and perform a patch test on a small area 24 hours before.
- Cold-pressed citrus oils, such as bergamot or lemon, can be photosensitizing: avoid the sun after application.
- Do not ingest essential oils without a specialist's recommendation.
- During pregnancy, breastfeeding, for children, or if you are undergoing treatment, seek medical advice before use.
- Keep bottles tightly closed, in a cool place away from light, and out of reach of children and pets.
